Do you feel any vibrations when you're on the road? Present at the steering wheel or within your seat? This can be a sign that your tyres need to be balanced. .

What is tyre balancing?

  • Balancing is the operation of distributing the weight of the tyres or wheels evenly around the axis of rotation. This ensures smooth and even operation at high speeds. Tyre balancing beneficial for the comfort of the driver, but also beneficial for the tyre as it limits the chances of irregular wear. Depending on the type of rims that your vehicle is fitted will affect how your tyres need to be balanced.
  • Why and when should the balancing be done?

Prior to your tyres being fitted to your vehicle, it’s essential that they are perfectly balanced. This step can be especially important following the below events :

  • An impact or an accident : the impact on the tyre against a pavement/curb for example may impact the tyres balance on the axis of your vehicle.
  • A flat tyre repair
  • Fitment of new tyres
  • If you're feeling vibrations
  • Incorrect pressure or alignment issues
  • Travelling long distance (greater than 15,000 kilometres)
  • How your tyres are balanced.

Balancing tyres is a delicate operation that requires the correct equipment and expertise, a tyre fitter and of course, a balancer. The balancer allows the qualified personnel to identify where the imbalance in the wheel is located when in rotation.

The balancer has a rotating support on which the wheel is fixed. Parameters of the tyre model are entered (such as width, diameter and rim type). A mechanical system will then put the wheel in rotation and stop it, and, if the tyre is unbalanced it will indicate the exact positions of the balancing weights to be placed. The weights will then be fixed on the rim and the balancing test repeated .

The use of a balancer by our TYREPLUS experts enables a "dynamic" balancing method to be carried out. Depending on the store, your local TYREPLUS may opt to use a "static" method. This method is based on the principle of placing a weight on the opposite side of the imbalance, but without rotating it. Dynamic balancing, is often more precise and efficient, because the balancer indicates exactly where to distribute the different masses on the tyre. Inflated to the correct pressure, your tyres can then be fitted to your vehicle before the final fitting stage: alignment.
